DERBENT
In the Ottoman period, the word 'derbent' was used in the sense of organization. In this sense, the outposts used in the passages and straits on the mountains were called 'derbent'. Derbent is a word of Persian origin and consists of two parts: Der: Geçit, Bent: Hold.
Derbent remained within the borders of the 'Eşrefoğulları Principality' during the Seljuk period. The boundaries of Eşrefoğulları Principality; After Beyşehir and Seydişehir, it includes the borders of Ilgın, Bolvadin and Akşehir. Cities such as Bozkır, Şarkîkaraağaç, Yalvaç, Gelendost, Kıreli, Doğanhisar and even Çal were included in the borders of the principality from time to time. After Süleyman Şah was killed by Timurtaş, Eşrefoğulları Principality was also destroyed. Later, Derbent changed hands frequently between the Ottoman and Karamanoğulları States. With the end of the Karamanoğulları Principality, Derbent was definitely included in the Ottoman Empire.
When the 16th century Anatolian sanjaks are examined, Derbent is connected to the Beyşehir sanjak in this period. There were 11 sub-districts attached to the Beyşehir sanjak. In the 16th century, Derbent was a village connected to the "GÖÇÜ NAHİYE", which was one of these 11 sub-districts. According to 18th century Ottoman documents, Derbent's former name was Tatlarhisarı. Tatlarhisarı, after Beyşehir sanjak, was affiliated to Ilgın District of Akşehir Sanjak until 1729.
Tatlarhisarı Village was assigned to the 'derbent' service in the record given in 1722. The following statement is included in this document: 'The inhabitants of Tatlarhisarı (Çiğil) Derbent, which is included in the Ilgın District, were included in the Derbent service. He was obliged to pay the avarızhanes and to work as derbent.' In the aforementioned document, the control area of Tatlarhisarı was the lands within the places named Çorukşık, Suvar, Boat Pit, Selayun, Gurun, Corden, Tekeceli, Aktubeylim, Kabaoyugu, Tilkörü.
We see Derbent registered after 1880 in Konya Yearbooks. Previous Konya Yearbooks could not be found. It is written that there was a madrasah in Derbent on this date and that the madrasah had 40 students. In the 18th century, Derbent organizations within the borders of the empire began to deteriorate. This deterioration is also valid for Konya Tatlarhisarı Derbent. As a result of the deterioration, Derbent, which was connected to the newly established Zaptiye Administration during the Tanzimat Era, began to be called only 'Derbent' and was recorded as 'Derbent'.
Derbent, which was founded in 1722, is a small town in the northwest of Konya. During the Ottoman period, the places established as outposts on the mountains, in the passages and in the straits were called Derbent and the soldiers serving in these outposts were named Derbentçi. The place where Derbent is located, as it was a gateway that needed to be protected during the Ottoman period, was constantly protected by Derbentists and Derbentists were stationed here, and it has continued as 'Derbent', which took its name from here and carried it to this day.
Derbent, which was a village from the proclamation of the Republic until 1930, became a municipality from this date on, and it was made a district with the law numbered 3644, which was accepted by the Turkish National Assembly on 09.05.1990 and published in the Official Gazette dated 20.05.1990 and numbered 20523. Derbent District completed its establishment works and started to serve on 09.08.1991.
